Title

Formulation and Evaluation of Miconazole Nitrate Orally Disintegrating Tablet

Abstract

The main goal of this study is to develop Miconazole nitrate orally disintegrating tablet and To optimize miconazole nitrate orally disintegrating tablet and carry out stability studies as per ICH guidelines. Miconazole nitrate is classified as a BCS II class drug medication, commonly prescribed for treating fungal infection. Miconazole nitrate is a synthetic antifungal agent that belongs to imidazole class of drugs. Miconazole nitrate orally disintegrating tablets are designed for oral administration, offer instant drug release, improved bioavailability and reduced dosage frequency. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital components of fungal cell membranes, thereby causing increased membrane permeability and ultimately fungal cell death. Orally disintegrating tablet of miconazole nitrate were formulated using maize starch, microcrystalline cellulose and disintegrating agent like sodium starch glycolate(SSG) to disintegrate the tablet rapidly. Tablets were evaluated for parameters including hardness, thickness, friability, drug content and in vitro drug release profile. The FTIR indicates that there are no interaction of excipients with the drug. Among the formulations tested, formulation exhibited the most beneficial qualities. It showed instant release and disintegrated within 15 sec. All the key parameters such as disintegrating time and drug release properties of miconazole nitrate were optimized in F5 compared to other formulations. The stability study indicates that there are no significant differences in the physical parameters. The results indicate that a instant release miconazole nitrate orally disintegrating tablet was successfully developed. The optimized formulation (F5) significantly improves stability and rapid disintegration and promising candidate for enhanced antifungal therapy.
