Abstract: The Santali language, one of the major tribal languages of India, has undergone a profound transformation in its mode of communication over the centuries. This evolution was significantly shaped by the pioneering efforts of PanditRaghunathMurmu, who created the OlChiki script in the 20th century. Prior to this, Santali existed primarily as an oral tradition, rich in folklore, songs, and rituals. The absence of a native script posed challenges in preserving the linguistic and cultural identity of the Santali-speaking communities. PanditMurmu’s invention of OlChiki marked a turning point, providing a written form that not only enabled literacy but also fostered cultural pride and continuity. This paper traces the historical development of Santali communication—from oral traditions to written literature—and critically examines the cultural, educational, and political impact of PanditMurmu’s legacy. It highlights how the introduction of OlChiki empowered generations of Santals, preserving their language in a rapidly globalizing world and reinforcing the importance of indigenous scripts in sustaining cultural heritage.
