Title

Evaluation of Post-Failure Parameter in Tension for Soft Body Impact on a Sandwich Composite Structure using LS DYNA

Abstract

Sandwich composites, known for their superior strength-to-weight ratio, are widely used in aerospace, marine, and automotive sectors but are prone to barely visible impact damage (BVID) from soft body impacts. This study investigates the effect of post-failure tensile parameters in modeling soft body impact on sandwich composite structures using LS-DYNA. Emphasis is placed on Material Model MAT_058 (*MAT_LAMINATED_COMPOSITE_FABRIC), which is commonly used for impact simulations involving composite materials. Post-failure behavior, especially in tension, plays a critical role in accurately predicting the residual strength and energy absorption of composites under impact. The results highlight the importance of correctly defining post-failure parameters for reliable simulations and underline MAT_058’s capabilities and limitations. An emphasis is provided to a parameter dominating the residual tensile properties of the Facesheet. Various modeling techniques, material models, failure criteria, and validation strategies are discussed, with emphasis on their role in accurate simulation of post-impact behavior. The simulation data is validated using the test result.
