Title

Renaissance and Reform: Tracing the Trajectories of Muslim Women's Progress in Kerala

Abstract

Abstract This article explores the complex trajectories of renaissance and reform movements among Muslim women in Kerala, tracing their historical roots, socio-religious dynamics, and contemporary implications. Through a critical engagement with archival records, literary narratives, and socio-political movements, the study examines how Muslim women in Kerala have negotiated identity, faith, and modernity across different periods—from the late 19th-century educational initiatives to 21st-century feminist assertions within Islamic frameworks. The article foregrounds the contributions of key reformers, community organizations, and grassroots movements that facilitated women's access to education, public discourse, and legal rights. Simultaneously, it interrogates the tensions between patriarchal interpretations of religion and emerging female agency. By situating these developments within the broader context of Kerala’s socio-political renaissance, the paper offers a nuanced understanding of how Muslim women have been both subjects and agents of reform. Ultimately, the article argues for recognizing these movements not as peripheral responses but as central to the reimagining of Muslim identity and gender justice in Kerala.
