Title

Comparative analysis of development trajectories of India and China following India’s economic liberalisation in 1991

Authors

Abstract

This article presents a comparative analysis of the economic development trajectories of India and China following India’s economic liberalization in 1991. While both countries emerged as major players in the global economy, their paths have been shaped by fundamentally different policy frameworks, institutional structures, and political ideologies. China embraced state led capitalism with aggressive export driven industrialization, while India opted for a more gradual, democratic, and services led growth strategy. This study explores key indicators such as GDP growth, sectoral contributions, FDI inflows, infrastructure development, poverty reduction, and human capital investments to assess the development gap and convergence patterns. It further investigates how reforms in trade, finance, and governance impacted each nation differently, and what lessons can be drawn for sustainable growth models in the Global South. The analysis reveals that while China has outpaced India in many metrics due to earlier and more centralized reforms, India’s democratic dividend and demographic edge present unique opportunities for the future. The paper concludes with policy implications and recommendations for India to accelerate inclusive development without compromising on democratic integrity.
