Title

Effect of Transformational and Laissez-Faire Leadership Styles on Extra Effort of Secondary School Teachers of Konso Zone, Southern Ethiopia

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of transformational and laissez-faire leadership styles on the extra effort of secondary school teachers in Konso Zone, southern Ethiopia. This study employed quantitative research method with prediction research design. It involved 113 respondents who were sampled from five selected secondary schools through simple random sampling technique. Multi-factor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) raters’ form was employed to gather relevant data. Multiple linear regression model was employed to analyze data. The cronbach’s alpha test result of items is 0.93. The result of the study indicates that laissez-faire and transformational leadership styles together explained 67% of variance in extra effort of teachers. It also shows that there is significant relationship between laissez-faire and transformational leadership styles and teachers extra effort. Furthermore, it indicates that laissez-faire and transformational leadership styles are useful predictors of teachers’ extra effort. Along with that, it indicates that laissez-faire leadership style decreases teachers’ extra effort by 1.5%, whereas transformational leadership style increases it by 65.5%. As a result, the increase the exercise of laissez-faire leadership style; the decrease the teachers extra effort of Konso zone secondary schools. In contrary to that, the increase the implementation of the transformational leadership style; the increase the extra effort of teachers of the zone. To sum up, the education sectors are suggested to facilitate leadership-related training for school leaders and researches are requested to conducting further researches using other variables and statistical tools.
