Change detection techniques play an important role in understanding the dynamics of land use/cover. The present study illustrates the dynamics of land use/cover in Jatayu Ganga Watershed in Kumaun Himalaya, Uttarakhand. Landsat satellite imageries of three different time periods, i.e., Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) of 2000, 2010 and 2020 were acquired by USGS Earth Explorer and the study quantified the changes in the Jatayu Ganga Watershed from 2000 to 2020 over the period of 20 years. Supervised Classification methodology has been employed using Maximum Likelihood Technique. The images of the study area were categorized into three different classes namely vegetation, agriculture and barren land. The results indicate that during the last two decades, vegetation and barren land have been increased by 27.29% (6.89 km2) and 43.73% (11.23 km2) respectively while agriculture have decreased by 62.63% (18.12 km2). This study demonstrates that remote sensing and GIS techniques are very useful for understanding land use/cover status and dynamics quickly and more accurately.
