The Role of Project-Based Learning in Science Classrooms: Fostering Inquiry, Engagement, and 21st-Century Skills

Abstract

Project-based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that emphasizes student-centered, inquiry-driven projects to enhance learning outcomes. In science classrooms, PBL aligns with the scientific method, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world application of concepts. This paper explores the role of PBL in science education, highlighting its benefits, challenges, and practical implementation strategies. Evidence from educational research demonstrates that PBL improves student engagement, conceptual understanding, and 21st-century skills, preparing students for STEM careers. However, effective PBL requires careful planning, resource allocation, and teacher support to address challenges like time constraints and curriculum alignment.
