Title

A REVIEW ON NEONATAL JAUNDICE

Abstract

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in newborns, characterized by yellow discoloration of the skin, sclera, and mucous membranes due to elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood (hyperbilirubinemia). It typically appears within the first week of life and is most often physiological, resulting from the immaturity of the liver’s ability to process bilirubin. However, it can also be pathological, caused by factors such as hemolytic disease, infection, or metabolic disorders. Early identification and monitoring are essential to prevent complications like kernicterus, a rare but severe form of brain damage. Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and serum bilirubin measurement. Management includes phototherapy, exchange transfusion in severe cases, and addressing underlying causes. With timely and appropriate treatment, the prognosis of neonatal jaundice is generally excellent.

Key Words

Neonatal jaundice include hyperbilirubinemia, bilirubin, jaundice, physiological jaundice, pathological jaundice, kernicterus, phototherapy, and exchange transfusion.
