Title

DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE COLUMNS RETROFITTED JACKETING WITH FRP USING SEGMENT PRESSURE TECHNIQUE

Abstract

Ensuring the dynamic resilience of reinforced‐concrete (RC) columns is critical for the safety and functionality of structures subjected to seismic, wind, and impact loads. Traditional strengthening methods concrete or steel jacketing and manual FRP wrapping often face limitations in installation quality, dimensional impact, and long‐term performance. This study introduces a segment‐pressure FRP retrofitting technique, wherein discrete axial bands of carbon‐fiber/epoxy wrap are consolidated under controlled radial pressure during cure, yielding uniform fiber saturation, void elimination, and enhanced bond integrity. Laboratory‐scale circular and square RC column specimens (100 mm cross‐section×1 200 mm height) were cast with 30 MPa concrete and conventional steel reinforcement. Specimens were retrofitted via (a) manual hand‐lay‐up FRP and (b) segment‐pressure FRP (100 mm segments, 0.20 MPa pressure two CFRP plies). Dynamic performance was assessed through low‐amplitude free‐vibration decay tests and medium‐energy guided impact trials (15–25 J). High‐resolution instrumentation including tri‐axial accelerometers, LVDTs, and strain gauges captured modal parameters, impact response metrics, and damage progression.
