Myositis is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation in the muscles, leading to muscle weakness and fatigue. It is also known as idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). The condition includes several types, such as dermatomyositis (DM), polymyositis (PM), inclusion body myositis (IBM), focal myositis, juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), and amyopathic dermatomyositis. Women are more frequently affected than men. Myositis occurs when the immune system mistakenly targets healthy muscle tissue. Inflammatory cells like white blood cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, and T cells (Th1, Th2, Th17, and Tregs) play a major role in the disease process. Diagnosis typically involves a muscle biopsy to detect inflammation and tissue degeneration. MRI scans are also used to evaluate muscle involvement, particularly in the lower limbs and pelvic region. First-line treatment involves glucocorticoids, while methotrexate and azathioprine are commonly used as immunosuppressive therapies. This article discusses the epidemiology, causes, symptoms, types, underlying mechanisms, and treatment approaches for myositis.
