Title

Assessment of Elephant Corridors and Anthropogenic Disturbances in Lakhimpur District, Assam: A Study of Man-Elephant Conflict

Authors

Abstract

Human-elephant conflict (HEC) in Assam increasingly threatens both biodiversity and rural livelihoods. This study assesses elephant corridors in Lakhimpur district through ecological surveys and community-level interviews to examine patterns of conflict and habitat usage. Elephant density was estimated using the dung count method along 30 transects, while GPS-aided ground truthing identified corridor degradation. Surveys from 17 forest-fringe households revealed extensive reliance on forest resources—over 90% of respondents collected firewood and fodder. Frequent crop-raiding and retaliatory killings underscore the need for urgent mitigation. Findings highlight the role of anthropogenic pressure in corridor fragmentation and conflict intensity. The study emphasizes the need for integrated conservation strategies including corridor restoration, stricter control of quarrying, and community-led solutions to promote coexistence between elephants and people in Assam.
