Title

Pre Menstrual Syndrome

Abstract

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common condition affecting women of reproductive age, characterized by physical and psychological symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, typically resolving with menstruation. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, commonly reported symptoms, impact on educational and social life, treatment options, and attitudes of female university students towards PMS. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 130 female students from a private university in Delhi NCR. Data were collected through a pretested, self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS 25. Results showed that 80% of participants were aware of PMS, and 43.8% were familiar with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). The most common symptoms were irritability (74.6%) and abdominal bloating (48.5%). Over half (53.8%) reported that PMS affected their academic performance and focus, while 49.2% noted an impact on their social life. Although 90% recognized PMS as significant, 40.8% did not take steps to alleviate symptoms. Students aged 23-30 years showed higher PMS knowledge compared to those aged 17-22 (p<0.05). Additionally, students who engaged in physical activity had better PMS knowledge (84.5%), with a statistically significant correlation.
