Regular evaluation of X‑ray units is essential to keep image quality high and patient dose appropriate. As flat‑panel detector (FPD) systems increasingly replace image‑intensifier and screen‑film units, their performance must also be monitored. However, there is no straightforward, low‑cost phantom designed specifically for routine quality control (QC) of FPD image quality. This article introduces a new, inexpensive phantom that can be used with both radiographic and fluoroscopic modes to assess spatial resolution, low‑contrast detectability and dynamic range in a single exposure. The phantom is built from three copper plates of differing thicknesses (0.5 mm, 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm), an aluminum step wedge ranging from 0.1 mm to 2.7 mm, and piano wires with diameters between 0.08 mm and 0.5 mm. Initial tests on an FPD unit showed that the device provides clear visual feedback on image quality across low, medium and high attenuating regions after just one shot. Because it is simple to construct and quick to use, this phantom offers a practical, day‑to‑day method for consistently checking the imaging performance of FPD systems.
