Title

Evaluating the Awareness of Nurses on Electrophysiological Studies in Cardiology at a Tertiary Hospital, Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, India

Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to assess the knowledge of nurses on Electrophysiological Study (EPS) in cardiology at a selected hospital in Amalapuram. EPS is a specialized diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the electrical activity of the heart and detect abnormal heart rhythms. Nurses play a critical role in pre-, intra-, and post-procedural care of patients undergoing EPS; therefore, their knowledge is vital for safe and effective patient management. The objectives of the study were twofold: (1) to assess the knowledge of nurses regarding EPS in cardiology, and (2) to determine the association between nurses' knowledge levels and selected demographic variables. A quantitative non-experimental approach was adopted, using a descriptive research design. The study sample consisted of 60 nurses selected through convenience sampling. A structured questionnaire was administered to gather data on knowledge levels. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and chi-square tests. The results revealed that only 13.2% of the nurses had adequate knowledge of EPS, while 45.3% demonstrated moderately adequate knowledge and 42.4% had inadequate knowledge. The study further identified a statistically significant association between nurses’ knowledge scores and demographic variables such as age and type of family. However, no significant association was found with other variables like educational status and professional qualification. These findings underscore the need for targeted educational interventions and continuous in-service training to bridge knowledge gaps and enhance the competency of nursing staff in the field of cardiac electrophysiology.
