Title

The Role of Technology in Teaching English

Authors

Abstract

This study looks at how varying levels of technology integration influence English‐language learning outcomes. This research uses a quasi‐experimental design, where students were divided into three groups: (1) traditional instruction without digital support; (2) PowerPoint‑adapted lessons; and (3) fully integrated multimedia lessons incorporating PPTs, videos, interactive games, and internet resources. Pre and post‐ tests measured proficiency gains while retention and engagement questionnaires were used to measure longer‐term learning and student perspectives. The results suggest that a higher order of technology integration and multimedia produced the most learning gains, unlike minimal or no digital support. Participants in Group 3 experienced an average of 18 % improvement from pre to post-test, while the retention measure demonstrated a higher retention rate of 88 %, relative to Group 2's (10.5 % improvement; 75 % retention) and Group 1's (5 % improvement; 65 % retention). Qualitative evidence supported the findings by indicating improved motivation, participation, and satisfaction when multimedia‐rich conditions were present. These findings highlight collaborative immersion afforded by these broadband, interactive environments enables richer cognition and affective engagement, albeit the practical implementation of such swiftly evolving technology requires merging sound infrastructure with these approaches, as well as the obligation for continual teacher training. This study informs both curriculum design and policy development by demonstrating how a commitment to investing in multimedia resources, whilst continuing teacher professional development, can change the way English is taught to learners, readying them to prosper in a digital age.
