Title

Awareness about Physiotherapy among Rural Population: A Survey Study

Abstract

Physiotherapy is a critical healthcare discipline that enhances functional in dependence and quality of life through evidence-based rehabilitation. Despite its importance, awareness of physiotherapy’s scope and accessibility remains limited, particularly in rural populations. This cross-sectional survey aimed to assess the level of awareness, perception, and utilization of physiotherapy services among the rural population in Patiala district, Punjab, India. A total of 515 individuals aged 18 years and above were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire comprising demographic details and questions assessing basic knowledge, sources of information, and beliefs regarding physiotherapy. Descriptive analysis was employed to summarize demographic characteristics, while the chi-square test was used to explore associations between variables such as education, age, and awareness at an alpha level of p < 0.005. Results revealed that 62.30% of participants were aware of physiotherapy, primarily through hospital referrals (31.50%) or social networks (22.70%). However, only 18.40% recognized physiotherapy as a primary contact profession, with many associating it solely with musculoskeletal conditions (67.80%) rather than its broader applications. Significant associations were found between higher education levels and greater awareness (p = 0.002), while age and gender showed no significant correlation. Misconceptions, such as equating physiotherapy with massage (15.20%) or yoga (9.60%), were prevalent. The findings highlight a moderate level of awareness but underscore significant gaps in understanding physiotherapy’s full scope, particularly in non-orthopaedic specialties. Barriers such as limited access to services, lack of resources, and inadequate health education were identified. This study emphasizes the need for targeted awareness campaigns and integration of physiotherapy into primary healthcare to enhance utilization in rural settings. Recommendations include leveraging social media and community health programs to bridge knowledge gaps and promote autonomous access to physiotherapy services.
