Title

Aminated Waste Polystyrene as a potential adsorbent for abating arsenate (V) from aqueous solutrions

Abstract

Arsenate (V) as an oxyanion shows high solubility in water which is highly lethal to flora and fauna. Novel Aminated Waste Poly Styrene (AWPS) was utilized for the adsorptive abatement of inorganic arsenic oxyanion (Arsenate) from aqueous solutions. FTIR spectra, point of zero charge and BET calculations for surface area were employed for the characterization of AWPS. The influence of various operational parameters affecting the arsenic (V) adsorption was investigated. Arsenate (V) adsorption was maximum at pH 2. The adsorbed quantity increased from 1.05 to 7.75 mg/g , as the initial concentration of As(V) raises from 2.5 to 25.0 mg/L. Total removal of 2.5 mg/L As(V) ions from aqueous solutions, occurred at 4.5 g/L of AWPS . Kinetic data follows pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption was physical in nature. This study showed that AWPS is a prominent adsorbent to remove environmental pollutants effectively. Recycling of the spent AWPS was carried out 0.1M NaOH as the desorbing agent.
