Title

From Oral Tradition to Written Tradition: Exploring the Evolution of Indian Literature as a Cultural Milestone

Authors

Abstract

The present paper aims to explore the shift from orality to textuality in Indian literature, a transformation that represents a significant watershed in the civilization’s literary history. Indian literature has a rich and diverse history that spans thousands of years. Traditionally, much of the literature was transmitted orally, with tales, myths, and songs passed down from generation to generation. However, with the arrival of writing and manuscript culture, and later, print technology, Indian literature transformed from orality to textuality. This shift marked a major turning point in the civilization’s literary history and has had a profound impact on the development of Indian literary traditions and culture. Religion and mythology have played a significant role in shaping Indian traditions. Many of the earliest works of Indian literature were religious and were transmitted orally for centuries before being written down. The epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, for example, were originally transmitted orally and were later written down and printed. These works are still widely read and performed today and continue to influence contemporary Indian literature. The purpose of this research paper is to explore the evolution of Indian literature from its origins in the oral tradition to its development as a written tradition and to examine how this evolution has contributed to the cultural development of India. The paper aims to provide an overview of the major literary works and traditions in India, including the Vedas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the various regional kinds of literature, and to analyze how these works have reflected and shaped Indian society and culture. By exploring the historical and cultural context of Indian literature, the paper seeks to highlight the significance of this evolution as a cultural milestone in India's history and to demonstrate the enduring legacy of India's literary traditions.
