Title

Comparative Study Of Injector Acting As Igniter For Gaseous Fuels In Small-Scale Combustion Systems

Abstract

Torch igniters play a vital role in initiating combustion in high-pressure environments, particularly in propulsion systems, industrial furnaces, and rocket engines. This paper explores the uses and importance of a torch igniter system equipped with two inlets one for fuel and the other for oxidizer or gas and an integrated spark plug for ignition. This design enables controlled and reliable ignition, enhancing safety and efficiency in combustion systems. The study also highlights the advantages of dual-inlet configurations and the spark ignition mechanism. The torch ignitor is a critical ignition device widely employed in modern aircraft gas turbine engines to ensure reliable initiation and re-ignition of combustion under a broad spectrum of operational conditions. Unlike basic spark ignitors, torch ignitors function by generating a stable pilot flame within a compact auxiliary combustion chamber, which is then directed into the main combustion zone to initiate large-scale ignition. This mechanism proves especially advantageous in environments where ignition is difficult such as at high altitudes, in cold-soaked conditions, or during the start-up of large turbofan or turbojet engines.
