Title

The Antimicrobial Effects of Natural Substances, Turmeric and Neem Oil on the Growth of E. Coli.

Authors

Abstract

This investigation explores the comparative antimicrobial effects of two natural substances—turmeric and neem oil—on the growth of Escherichia coli. Motivated by cultural familiarity with home remedies and the global concern surrounding antibiotic resistance, this study aims to evaluate whether plant-based compounds can offer effective alternatives to synthetic antibiotics. Using the agar diffusion method, turmeric and neem oil solutions at 5% and 10% concentrations were tested on non-pathogenic E. coli cultures. The diameter of inhibition zones around each treatment was measured to assess antibacterial efficacy. Results showed that neem oil was significantly more effective than turmeric at both concentrations, with 10% neem oil yielding the highest average inhibition zone. Statistical analysis using unpaired t-tests confirmed that the differences between neem oil and turmeric were significant, while variations within each substance’s concentration range were not. Despite limitations in sample size and measurement precision, the experiment supports the conclusion that neem oil has greater antimicrobial potential than turmeric against E. coli, suggesting its viability for further research in natural antibacterial treatments.
