Title

Reusable Menstrual Products: Environmental and Economic Benefits for Sustainable Living: A concept paper

Abstract

Disposable menstrual products generate vast quantities of plastic‐laden waste and impose significant lifetime expenses on menstruators. Reusable alternatives—menstrual cups, cloth pads, and period underwear—drastically reduce landfill burden, microplastic pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, while delivering up to 90% cost savings over a user’s reproductive years. This concept paper synthesizes life‐cycle assessments (LCAs), economic analyses, and case studies to elucidate the environmental and economic advantages of reusables. It examines sociocultural, infrastructural, and policy barriers impeding adoption, reviews successful programmatic interventions, and proposes a strategic framework to integrate reusable menstrual products into sustainable‐living initiatives and public health agendas. The paper culminates with actionable recommendations for stakeholders—policymakers, educators, health practitioners, and social enterprises—to mainstream reusable menstrual options, contributing to global Sustainable Development Goals on responsible consumption (SDG 12), climate action (SDG 13), and gender equality (SDG 5).
