A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on the knowledge of Child safety among mothers having under-five children in selected rural areas at Meerut

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND A child’s world centered around the home, school and the community. Providing a safe environment to children is a prime role of all parents, especially mothers. Safe environment means providing hazard free environment and teach children about self-protection measures to reduce the potential or unintentional injuries in children. Hence the focus of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on Child safety among mothers having under-five children at rural area of Nalpur, Meerut, U.P. OBJECTIVES 1. To assess the knowledge of mothers regarding management of Child Safety in terms of pre-test knowledge scores. 2. To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on management of Child Safety among mothers having under-five children by comparing the pre and post-test knowledge score. 3. To determine the association between pre-test knowledge scores on mothers having under-five children regarding child safety with their selected demographic variables. METHODS A quasi-experimental design and evaluative approach was used in the study. The data was collected from 60 subjects in selected rural areas Nalpur, Meerut, through purposive sampling technique. Data was collected using structured questionnaire. MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY Majority 90% of the mothers of under-five children had inadequate knowledge and 10% had moderate knowledge in the pretest. After administration of structured teaching program 26.7% of the subjects had adequate knowledge, 63.3% had moderate knowledge and only 10% had inadequate knowledge regarding Child safety in the post test. The overall analysis of level of knowledge of mothers having under-five children regarding Child safety showed that mean knowledge scores of the subjects at pre-test were 11.93 (45.88%) found to be inadequate knowledge regarding Child safety. After administration of structured teaching program mean knowledge scores of the subjects was 17.85 (68.65%) found to be improvement in the level of knowledge among mothers having under-five children. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION: Findings of the study show that there was a significant difference in pre test and post test level of knowledge of mothers having under-five children. From this it is concluded that the structured teaching program is effective in improving the level of knowledge of mothers having under-five children. And there was a significant association between level of knowledge of mothers having under-five children and selected demographic variables such as age, occupation and source of information.
