Title

Optimization of TIG Welding Parameters for Enhanced Tensile Strength in EN52 structural steel Material

Abstract

This paper focuses on the optimization of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) parameters to weld EN52 steel; a commonly used material in engine valves and the high temperature environment. The objective is to ensure the maximum Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of the welded joints based on the Taguchi technique, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple linear regressions. An L9 orthogonal array was used to assess three process parameters, namely, welding current, gas flow rate and filler wire diameter, three 3-levels. The outcome of experiment has shown that the influence of welding current was the strongest with the contribution of 72.96% in variation of UTS as per the ANOVA analysis. It was possible to develop a multiple linear regression model with a very good fit (R 2 = 99.99 percent), which would help with the accurate prediction of UTS. As shown on the figure, a confirmation experiment was performed under the optimized parameters (150 A current, 10 L/min gas flow, 1.6 mm filler) and resulted in a UTS value of 633 MPa, which is in close agreement with the modeled one (591 MPa) with an error of 7.10%. As the investigation shows, the Taguchi-based optimization procedure, backed up with statistical modelling, is extremely successful in enhancing weld strength and quality when applied to EN52 steel manufacturing.
