Title

APPLICATION OF HIGH- RESOLUTION GRAVITY DATA FOR DEPTH AND EDGE DETECTION OF GOLD BEARING BODIES IN CENTRAL SAKWA BONDO SIAYA COUNTY, KENYA.

Abstract

Following continued extraction of minerals in Central Sakwa of Bondo greenstone belt, exploration is currently muting from surface-based exploration to subsurface exploration. This necessitates a good understanding of the geophysical features in the subsurface which are likely to have a direct bearing on the distribution of minerals. In this study, the derived satellite gravity data was subjected to reduction process to remove effects which are not of geophysical interest, and later enhanced by removing long wavelength anomalies which are as a result of regional gravity trend. Power spectral analysis of geologically constrained gravity data was then applied, in order to obtain the limiting depth of the anomaly causative bodies. The power spectral analysis shows bodies of high density from the ground surface to a limiting depth of approximately 3750 m. The Tilt angle Derivative and Analytic Signal were also applied for depth and edge detection on gravity data. The areas coded color red or pink are areas revealing high density anomalous bodies seated at an average top depth of 500m- 1300m deep. It has an average thickness of about 2000m stretching a subsurface distance of about 10,000m in a NE-SW direction. The anomalous region is bounded by intrusives. These intrusives may be carrying materials of different densities migrating from magma at deep depths in the Earth’s crust to near the Earth’s surface. In mineral exploration environment, these intrusives could be a host for hydrothermal mineral like gold that cooled with time and got deposited in the location depth within the Earth’s crust
