Title

Analyzing the Alignment and Potential Conflicts between India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4)

Authors

Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4), which concerns ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030. NEP 2020 is India's biggest reform in decades, intended to restructure school and higher education, improve skills development, enhance inclusive practices, and capitalize on digital technology all at once. The findings showed high alignment of SDG-4 goals found in targets related to universal access, lifelong learning, vocational education, teacher training and early childhood education. But the analysis was also able to identify possible points of friction such as funding issues, digital divide issues, uneven implementation among states, and challenges associated with measuring progress. The study concludes that NEP 2020 enactment presents a vision-oriented plan that is aligned with SDG-4 - but enactment depends on the political will to act, approval of resources, participation of people, and follow up monitoring! Follow up research will examine state-level variations and the contextualized nature of partnership in achieving SDG-4 in the diverse educational landscape of India.
