Title

Resilient Defense Framework Against Selective Packet Drop Attacks in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract

Wireless ad hoc networks play a crucial role in mission-critical applications such as disaster recovery, military operations, and emergency communications, where reliable and secure data delivery is paramount. However, their decentralized architecture and reliance on cooperative packet forwarding make them highly vulnerable to selective packet drop attacks, where compromised nodes intentionally discard critical packets while forwarding others, thereby degrading network performance and trust. To address this challenge, we propose a resilient defense framework that integrates lightweight monitoring, trust evaluation, and adaptive routing mechanisms. The framework employs neighborhood-based reputation scoring to detect anomalous forwarding behavior, coupled with redundancy-aware routing strategies to ensure reliable delivery even in the presence of adversarial nodes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves significant improvements in packet delivery ratio, throughput, and detection accuracy compared to conventional trust-based and cryptographic solutions, while maintaining low computational and communication overhead. This resilience-oriented approach provides a robust foundation for securing wireless ad hoc networks against selective packet drop attacks, ensuring dependable communication in hostile or resource-constrained environments.
