Title

Performance Self-Curing Concrete using Waste Glass Powder as Partial Replacement of Cement

Abstract

The growing demand for sustainable construction materials has intensified the search for eco-friendly alternatives to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and conventional curing methods. This research presents a comprehensive performance evaluation of self-curing concrete incorporating waste glass powder (WGP) as a partial replacement for cement. The study addresses two critical challenges in the construction sector: the high environmental impact of cement production and the limitations of conventional curing in regions with restricted water availability or unfavorable site conditions. Post-consumer waste glass was processed into finely ground powder to enhance its pozzolanic reactivity. Cement was partially replaced by WGP at varying proportions of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight. Self-curing capability was achieved through the inclusion of polyethylene glycol (PEG 600) as an internal curing agent, enabling sustained hydration and minimizing dependence on external water curing. The experimental program evaluated both fresh and hardened concrete properties, including workability, slump flow, setting time, compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength. The results demonstrate that self-curing concrete incorporating WGP is a technically feasible, environmentally sustainable, and performance-enhancing alternative for modern construction practices. This approach not only promotes waste valorization and reduces the carbon footprint but also contributes to the improved durability and long-term performance of concrete structures
