Title

Ocimum Basilicum: A Review of It’s Phytochemical and Biological Qualities

Abstract

The sweet basil or Ocimum basilicum found mainly in Asia and Africa and has always been a plant of interest for the mankind because of its medicinal values. Many species of Ocimum are found all over the world but most studied among them is O. basilicum. This plant has been reported to have many therapeutic qualities, comprising antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition to that, it has been claimed to possess larvicidal, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. This review focusses on the recent researches and studies conducted on the various aspects of O. basilicum. The search strategy covered the literature that contained descriptions and was published within the last five years. To locate the survey, important scientific databases such as ScienceDirect, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The thorough investigation examines the diverse facets of Ocimum basilicum, encompassing its traditional applications, phytochemical makeup, therapeutic attributes, safety considerations, extraction techniques, and conservation initiatives. The relevant researches regarding the chemical structure and pharmacological effects of Ocimum basilicum have been examined.
