Title

GREENING TEXTILES: A BOTANICAL APPROACH TO ANTIBACTERIAL FINISHING USING BAMBUSA VULGARIES

Abstract

The increasing demand for hygienic and sustainable textiles has driven research into natural antimicrobial agents for fabric finishing. This study explores the application of Bambusa vulgaris (bamboo) leaf extract as a natural antibacterial finish on 100% cotton single jersey knitted fabric. The herb was collected, processed, and extracted using Soxhlet apparatus with ethanol as the solvent. The antibacterial activity of the extract was assessed through zone of inhibition and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The extract was then applied to the fabric using the pad-dry-cure technique. Post-treatment evaluations were conducted to assess antibacterial effectiveness, fabric strength, GSM, loop length, and wash durability. Results indicated a significant improvement in antibacterial properties while maintaining the fabric’s physical characteristics. The finished fabric showed excellent resistance to microbial growth even after multiple washes, confirming the effectiveness and durability of the treatment. This study highlights the potential of Bambusa vulgaris as an eco-friendly and efficient alternative to synthetic antimicrobial agents, making it suitable for babywear, healthcare, and intimate apparel applications.
