Title

Influence of Pile Group Arrangement and Damping Layers on Seismic Response of Tall Structures: A Soil–Structure Interaction Approach

Abstract

The study explores influence of pile group arrangement and damping layers on the seismic response of tall reinforced concrete structures through a comprehensive soil-structure interaction (SSI) framework. Traditional fixed-base assumptions often neglect the deformability of soil and flexibility of foundations, leading to inaccurate estimations of seismic demands. By employing advanced numerical modeling, including three-dimensional finite element analysis, this research evaluates the dynamic performance of high-rise buildings supported by various pile configurations specifically parallel and series groupings along with energy-dissipating damping layers. Key response parameters such as lateral deformation, interstorey drift, and settlement are examined under seismic loading. The optimized pile group arrangements and the inclusion of damping layers significantly enhance structural performance and reduce seismic vulnerability, offering valuable insights for designing resilient foundations in soft or seismic-prone regions.
