Title

The Significance of Allegory in John Milton's Paradise Lost

Authors

Abstract

John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667) stands as a monumental epic poem that reimagines the biblical narrative of the Fall of Man, employing allegory as a central literary device to explore profound theological, political, and moral themes. This research paper examines the significance of allegory in the poem, particularly how it shapes the portrayal of characters like Sin and Death, Satan, and the cosmic conflict between good and evil. Through allegorical representations, Milton justifies "the ways of God to men" (Book I, line 26, p. 3), critiques monarchical tyranny, and delves into human free will and redemption. Key allegories, such as the personification of Sin and Death in Book II and the War in Heaven in Books V-VI, serve not only as narrative tools but also as vehicles for Milton's Republican ideals and Protestant theology. Drawing on close textual analysis and scholarly interpretations, the paper argues that allegory in Paradise Lost bridges the literal and symbolic, enabling a multifaceted critique of human frailty and divine justice. Findings highlight allegory's role in enhancing the poem's sublimity and its enduring relevance in literary and philosophical discourse. Suggestions for future research include comparative studies with Milton's other works or contemporary epics.
