Title

ROLE OF LYMNAEA SNAILS IN FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS OF WEST BENGAL, INDIA

Abstract

Lymnaea snails are very much common in various freshwater ecosystems of West Bengal, India. They are primary consumers and thereby help to transfer energy to the secondary consumers on way of feeding the autotrophs who are able to trap the solar energy during photosynthesis. Lymnaea play a significant role in regulating the food-web in the aquatic ecosystems as certain species of leeches, arthropods, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals are very much dependent on these snails for their food. Also a large section of people consume these snails either as food or as medicine. These snails are sold in the local market also. Apart from their definite roles in the ecosystems as primary consumers and in regulation of the population of secondary consumers the phenomenon of triggering the nutrient cycling both in aquatic and terrestrial environment could not be ruled out. As these snails are palatable and nutritious commercial farming would prove successful to get animal proteins at a low price and even, without cost, if village people are trained to cultivate these snails in their own ponds.

Key Words
