Title

“TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AN AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCIES AMONG STUDENTS OF SELECTED JUNIOR COLLEGES”.

Abstract

Background: Suicide is a common mental health problem that affects people of all ages. While rates of suicide in adolescents and youths are reported as lower than those in older populations around the world, they represent the third leading cause of death in 15–19-year-olds. The most of members 86.4%, were unaware of any suicide emergency support alternatives. Most commonly listed options were support from family individuals, peer groups, advising and psychiatric consultation. These were also embraced as most preferred support alternatives. There is a low level of awareness about suicide back services among young Indian adults. There is a require for facilitated efforts to raise awareness and promote uptake of suicide support services in this group. Objectives of the study: 1. To assess the knowledge regarding psychiatric emergencies among students of selected junior colleges. 2. To evaluate effectiveness of awareness programme on knowledge regarding psychiatric emergencies among students of selected junior colleges. 3. To find association study finding with selected demographic variables. Material and method: The research design used for the study was quasi-experimental, one group pre-test post-test design with quantitative research approach. 102 subjects were selected by the non-probability convenience sampling technique. The data was collected with the help of a self-structured questionnaire and a standardized observational checklist. After the pretest, awareness programme was conducted to enhance their knowledge. Post-test was conducted on the 7th day. The data was analyzed, by using descriptive and inferential statistics on the basis of objectives and hypotheses of the study. To compute the data, a master data sheet was prepared by the investigator. The statistical tests used for the analysis of the result were: Students paired t test, Chi-square Test, Pearson’ Correlation Coefficient, Reliability Analysis. Result: The comparison between the mean of pretest and post-test for knowledge showed that the mean and standard deviation of pre- and post-intervention level of knowledge among Junior college students. The knowledge score in pretest was 5 and maximum knowledge score in pre-test was 19. Mean knowledge score in pretest was 10.26±3.19 and mean percentage of knowledge score in pretest was 36.65±11.40. and the knowledge score in post-test was 10 and maximum knowledge score in post-test was 28. Mean knowledge score in post-test was 21.60±4.47 and mean percentage of knowledge score in post-test was 77.17±15.97. The comparison of pre-test and post-test knowledge scores shows a significant improvement in knowledge after the awareness program. The calculated t-value (22.74) is much higher than the tabulated t-value (1.98), indicating that the awareness program was statistically effective in increasing students' knowledge about psychiatric emergencies. Thus, the awareness program was found to be effective in enhancing the knowledge of junior college students regarding psychiatric emergencies, and the hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Conclusion: The study concluded that the awareness program significantly improved junior college students' knowledge of psychiatric emergencies. Pre-test results showed poor to average knowledge, while post-test results indicated a substantial increase in knowledge, with many students achieving excellent scores. Statistical analysis confirmed the improvement was highly significant, supporting the effectiveness of the program.
