Title

TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EDUCATIONAL COUNSELLING ON KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS SEXUAL PRACTICES AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN OF SELECTED HOSPITALS

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy is a crucial phase where maternal well-being directly affects fetal health. Sexual health, though important, is often neglected due to misconceptions and lack of guidance. Limited knowledge of safe practices may cause anxiety, discomfort, and strained relationships. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of educational counselling in improving knowledge and attitudes toward sexual practices among pregnant women. Methodology: A pre-experimental study was conducted among 52 pregnant women selected through convenient sampling in antenatal clinics and hospital wards. Data were collected using a structured tool comprising demographic variables, a self-structured knowledge questionnaire, and a standardized Attitude Scale (ABSSP). Participants underwent educational counselling, and their knowledge and attitudes were assessed before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square tests. Results: Post-intervention findings revealed significant improvement. In the pre-test, 92.3% had poor knowledge, 7.7% average knowledge, and none good knowledge. In the post-test, 65.4% achieved good knowledge, 34.6% average, and none remained poor (χ² = 90.909, p < 0.001). Regarding attitudes, all participants initially had poor attitudes; post-test, 98.1% demonstrated good attitudes and 1.9% average (χ² = 104, p < 0.001). These results confirm that educational counselling effectively enhances knowledge and attitudes toward sexual health during pregnancy. Conclusion: Educational counselling significantly enhances knowledge and attitudes toward sexual practices during pregnancy. Incorporating such interventions into routine antenatal care can dispel myths, reduce anxiety, and strengthen partner relationships. Future research should examine long-term outcomes and strategies for integrating sexual health education into diverse cultural and clinical contexts.
