Title

A Quantitative Study on Prospective Teachers’ Assessment Skills About Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking and Problem- Solving Skills Before intervention on HOTS

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigated the views of future educators on their assessment skills related to critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem-solving before they finished their Bachelor of Education degree. We randomly selected 36 participants from the final year B. Ed GRI (DTU) students in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. To assess their skills in creating questions that use Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), students had to develop an assessment tool with six dimensions. These dimensions included both objective and subjective question types. The objective questions comprised 20 fill-in-the-blank items, 10 matching items, 10 true/false items, and 20 multiple-choice questions. The subjective questions included 20 short answer questions and 20 paragraph answer questions. We analysed the scores descriptively. The analysis highlighted the need to include HOTS in assessment tools, showing that student performance was moderate in some areas and low in others. This finding suggests that future teachers need to be more aware of HOTS, especially in improving these three skills. The future educators recognized the importance of HOTS in developing higher-order thinking skills. Each student teacher identified the areas they should focus on when creating HOTS-aligned questions. The study suggests enhancing prospective teachers' skills in critical and creative thinking, as well as problem-solving, and encourages them to apply these skills in real-life situations.
