Abstract
Birds are of immense ecological importance as bio-indicators for the quality of environment and habitat structure. They are very sensitive to any slight change occurring in the environment. The present study deals with the breeding behaviour of the Red Vented Bulbul [Pycnonotus cafer; Linnaeus 1766] in the Vengurle Tehsil of Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. The observations were made on the nest-building behaviour and parental care of Red vented Bulbul (P. cafer) locally in Vengurle at different sites. Both the male and female birds were observed to be equally active in choosing the site as well as in the nest building process. Breeding activities of the birds were observed right from the initiation of the nest building up to the first flight of the fledgelings from the nests in the study area during the study period. Present study had involved observations on total 8 nests. Parental behavioural aspects in terms of patrolling of the nest, incubation of eggs, feeding of chicks and their protection etc. were also observed during the study. Overall breeding behaviour of Red Vented Bulbul (P. cafer) is amazing and needs more micro-studies to reveal the details of the same.
