Jeet Thayil, a noted Indian poet presents a crude social picture of contemporary urban life, generally in India but its repercussion is felt through the global modernity. His poems capture the nude realities of cities, depression of the individuals, and frustration in relationship. The social picture in Thayil's poetry is fragmented, globalized- filled with alienation, addiction and dislocation but there also has a poetic quest for truth and realities. His poems document the realities of late 20th and early 21st century life, making him a chronicler of modern social truths. Thayil's background highlights displacement not at all geographical but emotional and personal. Social picture in his poetry symbolizes dislocation, pathos and searching for a modern existence.
