Colonial period in Arunachal Pradesh, throughout its stretch, is marked by a series of Anglo-tribal conflicts. The character of these conflicts revolved primarily around upland raids and collection of tribute from various hill tribes. An attempt to mitigate a peace between colonial administration and such tribes naturally gave shape to new colonial policies. While such arrangements might have served its purpose for some tribal groups, others found these policies repugnant. A case in point is the Adi tribe which inhabits the central part of Arunachal Pradesh. The tribe has a rich history of raids from the Abor hills into the plains, negotiations and treaties with the colonial administration. Evidently, one can see a series of military expedition against this tribal group spreading across more than six decades. Hence, the paper intends to record and analyse the upland raids of the Adi tribe, the shaping colonial policy, adherence to these policies and the pattern of colonial response to such raids.
