Title

SURVEY OF AQUATIC ANGIOSPERMIC PLANTS IN MANIKA LAKE OF MUZAFFARPUR, BIHAR.

Authors

Abstract

Manika Lake is a perennial source of water of near about four (4) villages living on the banks and its surrounding. In the present study, regular survey of the lake was done during monsoon, winter and summer. Total 40 aquatic angiospermic plants were identified in different study periods. Plants were identified, and both plants belonging to monocots and dicots were recorded. These plants were grouped as marginal, 62.5%, free floating 7.5%, rooted floating 12.5%, and submerged 17.5%. It was further noted, that these aquatic macrophytes were not found in all the study period. During monsoon the free floating as well as rooted floating species was observed, while in winter the submerged and few marginal species were observed. Similarly, during summer few rooted floating, free floating and marginal species were noted in Manika Lake. Some of the submerged species which have perennial habit were also noted. In the present survey, it was noted that maximum marginal areas are being occupied by the invasive species, which appears to be a dangerous trend. Secondly, during monsoon, winter and summer maximum water surface was occupied by Eichhornia crassipes. During monsoon, the morphology of plant was different while during winter it had succulent leaves. Similarly, Lemna minor was covering large area of surface water in the lake. Therefore, lake water needs regular management.
