Title

Relationship between Learning Styles and ICT Adoption: An Empirical Study in Secondary Education

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between learning styles and the adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) among secondary school students. In today’s technology-driven educational environment, students’ cognitive preferences significantly influence how they engage with digital learning tools. Understanding the interaction between learning styles and ICT adoption is vital for designing learner-centric pedagogies and enhancing academic outcomes. A descriptive-correlational research design was adopted, involving 320 students (160 boys and 160 girls) from eight secondary schools in Bhopal district. The Learning Style Inventory (LSI) based on the VARK model and an ICT Adoption Scale (developed and validated for this study) were administered. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, ANOVA, and multiple regression. Results revealed that visual and kinesthetic learners exhibited higher ICT adoption levels than auditory learners. A significant positive correlation (r = 0.59, p < 0.01) was found between learning style adaptability and ICT adoption. Regression analysis indicated that learning style preference accounted for 41% of the variance in ICT adoption behavior. Moreover, students with multimodal learning tendencies showed greater technological adaptability and confidence in using educational software. The study concludes that cognitive learning preferences are strong predictors of ICT adoption, emphasizing the need for differentiated digital pedagogy. Schools should integrate varied sensory approaches and ensure teacher training aligns with students’ learning diversity to promote inclusive, technology-supported education.
