Title

Karl Marx's Concept of Alienation in the Contemporary World: Re-evaluating Its Relevance

Abstract

This paper re-evaluates Karl Marx's theory of alienation, articulated initially in his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, as a robust and enduring framework for understanding contemporary social ills. It demonstrates how the four dimensions of alienation—from product, activity, species-being, and fellow humans—continue to manifest in evolving capitalist structures, particularly within digital labour, the gig economy, and consumer culture. The analysis extends beyond Marx's industrial focus and explores how these phenomena are not merely subjective feelings but objective structures inherent to modern capitalism. By intersecting Marx's framework with other critical theories, the paper highlights the systemic nature of contemporary alienation. It concludes by emphasizing Marx's continued analytical power for understanding present challenges and their implications for informing practices aimed at societal transformation.
