Title

Sharir Sthana's Prakriti Concept: A Narrative Review of Psychosomatic Health and Disease Susceptibility

Abstract

This narrative review explores the classical Ayurvedic concept of Prakriti, as described in Sharir Sthana, and its relevance to psychosomatic health and disease susceptibility. Rooted in the principles of Tridosha and Triguna, Prakriti reflects an individual's inherent constitution, influencing both physiological and psychological predispositions. The review synthesizes knowledge from classical texts like Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, along with 35 peer-reviewed studies spanning Ayurgenomics, psychoneuroimmunology, epigenetics, and integrative medicine. A systematic PRISMA-based literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and AYUSH Research Portal, identifying 1,082 initial records. After applying stringent inclusion and quality criteria, 35 high-quality sources were selected for thematic synthesis. The findings reveal that Vata types are prone to anxiety, insomnia, and neurodegeneration; Pitta types are susceptible to inflammatory and stress-related disorders; and Kapha types show higher risks for metabolic and respiratory conditions. Emerging scientific evidence, including genomic and epigenetic studies, supports these traditional classifications, demonstrating Prakriti-specific molecular signatures. The review highlights the convergence of Ayurveda with modern psychobiological models, particularly in preventive and personalized medicine. It underscores the need for standardized assessment tools, interdisciplinary research, and digital health applications to operationalize Prakriti-based diagnostics. By bridging ancient theory and modern science, this review presents a comprehensive model for constitutionally informed healthcare, advocating for integrative strategies in mental and physical well-being.
