Title

Understanding Srotas Sharir through Classical Literature: A Systematic Review with Reference to Charaka and Sushruta Samhitas

Abstract

This systematic review critically explores the concept of Srotas Sharir as delineated in the two principal classical Ayurvedic texts—Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita—through a comparative and thematic analysis. The objective of the review is to consolidate, compare, and interpret classical descriptions of Srotas, with particular attention to their etymology, classification, anatomical and functional attributes, pathological implications (Srotodushti), and commentarial insights by Chakrapani and Dalhana. Employing a qualitative systematic design based on PRISMA protocol, 182 scholarly sources were initially identified, narrowed down to 33 final studies through rigorous inclusion, exclusion, and quality assessment criteria. Primary data was extracted from classical texts, supported by peer-reviewed commentaries and research articles. The review identifies key philosophical and structural differences in the understanding of Srotas: Charaka emphasizes functional-physiological interpretation while Sushruta adopts a structural-anatomical perspective, often mapping Srotas to surgically relevant structures. Commentators like Chakrapani and Dalhana provide valuable clarifications, aiding the reconciliation of textual disparities. The study also maps contemporary anatomical and physiological equivalents to classical Srotas systems, such as correlating Pranavaha Srotas to respiratory pathways, and Medovaha Srotas to lipid metabolism and the lymphatic system. The review reveals a significant gap in unified interpretation and translational research that bridges classical doctrine with modern biomedical science. It advocates for structured academic modules and interdisciplinary studies to revitalize Srotas Sharir in contemporary Ayurvedic education and integrative clinical practice. The findings affirm the enduring relevance of Srotas as diagnostic and therapeutic constructs and underscore the necessity of preserving classical integrity while enabling scientific innovation.
