Title

Living in Third Space: A Study of Diasporic Identity in Monika Ali’s Brick Lane

Authors

Abstract

The question, who am I? is a matter of interrogation and contemplation by mankind for centuries. The idea of identity is deeply intertwined with social, political, economic, cultural, national, gender, and religious constructs of a human. The Oxford Learner’s Dictionary defines identity as “who or what somebody/something is”. However, in the context of Postcolonialism, identity is recognized in binary opposition. The struggle of the colonized people to formulate the cultural identity and social value of the newly independent nations was responsible for cultural transformation that led to a conflict with the colonizer's culture. As Lawrence Grossberg in “Identity and Cultural Studies: Is That All There Is?” points out that identities are always relational and incomplete. It is always a temporary and unstable effect of relations that defines identities by marking differences This research paper looks at the ways through which different genders in Monika Ali’s Brick Lane form their identity while living in the third space as proposed by Homi K. Bhabha. Along with this, it studies the role of technology in the lives of the diasporic community by applying qualitative research approach and how it communicates with humans to help them survive in a displaced location. Finally, the article will highlight various critical issues faced by dislocated communities and to make the world a better place for them.
