Title

The Role of Social Media in Modern Investment Decision-Making

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has revolutionized the landscape of modern investing, reshaping how investors gather, share, and interpret market information. Unlike traditional financial channels, platforms such as Twitter (X), Reddit, Telegram, and YouTube facilitate real-time discussions, peer-to-peer communication, and crowd-sourced investment insights. This democratization of information has increased investor participation and confidence, particularly among retail investors. However, the same platforms also amplify risks associated with misinformation, speculative hype, and emotionally driven decision-making. This study investigates the dual impact of social media on investment behaviour—how it both empowers investors through accessibility and transparency while simultaneously exposing them to irrational or herd-based tendencies. Using a mixed-method approach with primary survey data and secondary literature, the research evaluates how online financial discussions shape investor perceptions, influence confidence levels, and contribute to market volatility. The findings highlight that while social media enhances awareness and engagement, overreliance on unverified content can lead to speculative trading and poor investment outcomes. The study concludes that digital financial literacy and critical evaluation of online information are essential for responsible investing in the age of social media.
