Title

Beyond literacy Education as the catalyst for gender Equality and National progress.

Abstract

Education is not merely a means of literacy acquisition but a transformative force for achieving gender equity and national development. This study examines the relationship between educational expansion, gender equality, and socio-economic growth, emphasizing India’s progress and challenges. Using secondary data from national surveys, the research explores how education influences gender roles and social mobility, particularly in patriarchal contexts like rural Bihar. Findings indicate that parental education levels—more than gender—shape progressive attitudes toward girls’ education. Government schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and the Mukhyamantri Balika Cycle Yojana have improved enrollment and reduced dropout rates, yet structural barriers like poverty, safety concerns, and socio-cultural norms persist. The study highlights that while quantitative gains in literacy are evident, qualitative gaps remain in learning outcomes and empowerment indicators. Therefore, achieving genuine gender parity requires a holistic approach that integrates education policy with gender sensitization, economic inclusion, and community participation.
