Title

The New Historical Dimensions of Discursive Historicism in the Fiction of Amitav Ghosh: A Critical Perspective

Abstract

Amitav Ghosh employs history as a backdrop for his narrative. He prioritizes individuals over their backgrounds. History subtly reverberates in the background of his novels. Consider The Glass Palace, an enormous fictional work that encompasses almost a century of history and four generations of characters across India and Southeast Asia. All of Ghosh's novels exemplify the author's ability to harmonize the breadth of history with the intricacies and profundities of human experiences. Ghosh narrates his story with meticulous precision and profound insight, instilling in the reader a persistent unease regarding the capacity of historical forces to profoundly transform the lives of ordinary individuals. The human historian in Ghosh's novels traverses cultures and regions, negotiating what is today referred to as the 'third space' in anthropological research. The existing critique of Ghosh's oeuvre has shown substantial socio-cultural representations. A issue is the representation of history that intersects with fiction, which has been a focal point of extensive critical discourse on new historicism. The topics of Ghosh's oeuvre are understood via individual people rather than through active historical figures. This piece, by its humorous representation, challenges new historicism in a discursive manner. It discloses the collaborative construction of a post-national future within the context of historical interface fiction. Ghosh correlates problematic nationalism with its historical context. For my article presentation, I have selected the title “The New Historical Dimensions of Discursive Historicism in the Fiction of Amitav Ghosh – A Critical Perspective,” which examines the historical aspects that intersect with fiction in Ghosh's novels. I attempted to analyze the essence of this essay by examining it through the diverse cultural lenses of current Indian society. Keywords: Discursive, New Historicism, Anthropology, Cultural Aspects, Dimension, Oeuvre. Preface
