Title

AN OVERVIEW OF LARYNGOPHARYNGEAL REFLUX DISEASE WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO PITTAJA SWARABHEDA

Abstract

Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease (LPRD) is an inflammatory disorder affecting the upper aerodigestive tract and is often underdiagnosed due to its atypical presentation. It poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, as it frequently does not respond well to conventional management. This review attempts to establish a conceptual relationship between LPRD and the Ayurvedic entity Pittaja Swarabhedha by analyzing both conditions through their causative factors, clinical manifestations, and underlying mechanisms. The analysis draws upon contemporary research alongside classical Ayurvedic texts, particularly the Suśruta Saṃhitā and Caraka Saṃhitā. The study identifies clear parallels between the modern understanding of reflux pathology—triggered by stress, irregular diet, and acidic foods—and the Pitta-vitiating factors (Nidāna) described in Ayurveda. Similarly, the hallmark symptoms of LPRD such as throat burning and hoarseness correspond closely with the Lakṣaṇa of Pittaja Swarabhedha mentioned by Suśruta. The upward reflux of gastric contents in LPRD can be conceptually compared to Vimārga Gamana, the abnormal upward movement of aggravated Pitta Doṣa. By integrating both perspectives, Ayurveda provides a comprehensive framework that not only explains the condition’s root cause but also suggests holistic management strategies complementing modern medical approaches.
