Title

The Role of Folk and Traditional Dances of Kokborok Speakers

Abstract

Tripura being the third smallest state of Northeast India is culturally vibrant having nineteen different tribes. All these tribes may linguistically be divided into three groups: The Tibeto-Burman group, the Kuki-Chin group and the Arakan group. There are a total of nine dialects speaking Kokborok, which is a Tibeto-Burman Language. The tribes are also called as Tiprasa people, the Tiprasa people has their own culture and tradition. Oral tradition is one of the most important parts of the tribal communities which keep up the historical records, heritage and culture. Every community of Tiprasa people has their own traditional and folk dances, songs, folktales, folklore, lullabies, chants during traditional rituals, are all part of oral traditions. The folk dance is the reflections of livelihood and lifestyle, since the ancestral period of tribal people of Tripura. This article will mainly focus on the Kokborok speakers of Tripura and the role of traditional and folk dance into keeping the culture, heritage and tradition alive.
